About:
Disciplined: Waver has always been studious and obsessive when it comes to magic and research. The pursuit of this knowledge was his first love. Waver is incredibly intelligent, with a mind built for analysis. This hard work has paid off in spades, since he lacks magical ability or lineage, leaving him with no other option in the field of magecraft. Being able to understand magic at its most base parts has given him the talent for creating simple but effective spells, particularly in the area of alchemy. It was a trait Iskandar recognized early in young Waver, and encouraged. This knowledge is also why he makes for such a great teacher. He can explain magic with concepts easily understood by even the poorest of students. His classes have gotten very popular thanks to this, and also due his infectious passion for the subject. Despite the almost perpetually grumpy expression on Waver's face, he's incredibly popular with the students at the Clock Tower, who've given him a bevy of nicknames (for example, Professor Charisma). He has a tactical mind, and he's taken up the hobby of strategy RPG video games – the favorite of Iskandar during his short time back on Earth.

Traumatized: The scars the Fourth Holy Grail War left in Waver are too deep to ever fully heal. His bond and commitment to Iskandar has never faltered, even in the moments right after he declared it. Iskandar asked for Waver to be his retainer, and he agreed without hesitation. Iskandar charges forward and is almost immediately eviscerated in front of Waver by Gilgamesh, and the guilt will never truly leave him, wishing he could have died along side his king. It's many years until he is able to move past it. Iskandar wouldn't want him to wallow, but to keep his eyes on the horizon and enjoy the journey in front of him. Waver saw a lot of death in the short time of the Grail War, like Ryunosuke and Caster's unfortunate victims, a number of small children they gleefully sacrificed. The conclusion of the Grail War ends with over 500 dead in the town where it took place as well. Kayneth's death in the Grail War is another barb, with Waver blaming himself for his teacher's defeat. Waver had stolen his spot, and maybe it wouldn't have happened had he not interfered. It's this guilt that causes him to work for Kayneth's sister Reines, and (temporarily) taking up the mantle of Lord El-Melloi II.

Idealist: The only reason Waver hasn't completely burned out in the selfish, dog-eat-dog world of mage society is his real belief in the goodness in talent in others. Other mages look down on this sort of thinking, which Waver hides behind that grumpy exterior, but he can't hide it from his students and those he truly cares about. He believes life is valuable, even if he doesn't feel the same when it comes to himself. Every day is a struggle to continuing living as Iskandar taught him to, with pride, but he manages it. It's difficult, but it's the most important thing in the world to him, and he can't let Iskandar down. Despite all the difficulties and pain existing in mage society brings him, Waver continues to work and study at the Clock Tower. While he figures he will never have a true impact on its society, he will always continue trying. You can't know what will happen if you don't try. He truly loves his work with the students at the Clock Tower.

Worthless: If I've said it once I've said it a hundred times: no one hates Waver Velvet like Waver Velvet. Shutting out the depression and anxiety that has haunted him his whole life gets incredibly difficult when dealing with life in mage society. Nothing he can do will ever get him more power or the right lineage, and it weighs on him heavily. He holds the title of Lord El-Melloi II, keeping the title for Reines until she comes of age to take it up. Every time he has to be referred as the noble title he didn't earn is another jab in the gut, as the title once belonged to Kayneth. He insists people add “the second” on the name to differentiate himself. He absolutely abhors the weak, cowardly, hot-headed crybaby he was as a kid, and does everything he can to keep that stony exterior to counteract it. It's only Iskandar's influence, that showed him his own worth, that really keeps him going some days. Even after ten years, he has a hard time believing it. Due to his own lack of power, Waver is often needing to be rescued by others, usually by more powerful mages (like Gray), making him feel further like a burden.

Compassionate: Waver hates violence, and sees it as a crutch of the weak. Wars and bloodshed are to be avoided. Every life is precious. Waver deeply cares about people. For example, he takes in Gray as an apprentice, even when simply looking at her face is a trauma trigger for him. Gray was born with the same face of King Arthur, who was a Servant in the Grail War who almost killed Waver and Iskandar. Despite this, he takes her in and cares for her, and her for him. Waver is a mess when it comes to cleaning and organization, and Gray is a great help with that. Early in Case Files, Waver attempts to pet a stray cat in the neighborhood, but it bites him instead. Later, he and Gray stumble on the unfortunate body of the cat, dead after being hit by a car. Waver still stops to put the animal's spirit to rest with a spell, and gives it a proper burial back at the Clock Tower. Bite his hand, and Waver will still reach out to you.

Skills and Abilities: Waver is a mage of little power but great knowledge. His obsessive studying lead him to be an authority on the practical side of magic, devising simpler ways to cast spells, and breaking the processes with such clarity that even the most novice mages can follow along. It's what's helped him to become an amazing teacher, and why he ends up with a lot of stragglers and near-failures who have turned into high-ranking mages down the line. He can pinpoint a person's hidden talents, and help them to grow. (Hopefully the Commissary won't hold out on him when he needs more.)

This is also why he excels in alchemy over any other discipline, as it can be treated more like a science than just magic alone. He is also relatively adept with things like hypnotic suggestion spells, stabilization spells, and defensive shields. But, they're all very weak spells at best. His Mystic Code (a mage's personal spell catalyst) are his cigars, which he'll have to bring with him to help cast.

Over everything else, though, Waver is an incredibly gifted analyst and researcher. His knowledge of magic principals is incredibly in depth. He can figure out how a spell works after only seeing it used once. The Clock Tower likes to use him as their investigator on strange magic-related cases and sends him out to solve them. While a tactical and analytical thinker, he can be creative too, which shows in how he overcomes his shortcomings in magic with simpler alternatives. Other mages have accused Waver's scientific thinking to be a bane to magic, since such methods that try to explain how it works only serve to destroy and unravel it.

Why is your character a warden? Waver is a good person, not concerned with his own status, and has a deep belief in the idea that people can be brought to their full potential with the right help. He's demonstrated this countless times in the classroom. Once upon a time he was a selfish, cowardly, temperamental, and narcissistic person, and while sometimes those traits rear their heads, Waver thinks that if he can change, anyone can. It just takes the right person to care. Few people are beyond redemption or hope in his eyes.

It should be noted that Waver himself will probably argue that he's not warden material, that he's not good enough of a person for such a job. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Pick and Choose:
– What kind of inmate would your character warden best? Who would they not be able to warden?

There wouldn't be too many types of inmates he wouldn't at least try to help. If after several tries, he can't get an inmate to trust him even in the slightest, he's not so stubborn to think that maybe someone else couldn't help them instead. But if he recommended an inmate be moved to another warden, he'd probably still work with the new warden on the case. He knows he won't get along with everyone, or that everyone will cooperate, but he'll try his damnedest. He wants to hear from the inmates their own stories, and why they think they're here and what they need to graduate. He's not here to treat them like actual prisoners.

The best type of person would probably be someone who needed a push in a direction they may not even know was an option to them, and responds to the positive reinforcement. Waver can pick out talents in people pretty well, and maybe if he can get a prisoner who needs a new direction in life on a new and correct life path that really speaks to them, he'd be happy with that. A prisoner who thought their only purpose was to lie, cheat or steal? Nope. You're a chef now. Or a writer. Or a blacksmith. Or a mage. Whatever it is, Waver is going to help them find it, and they're going to turn out incredible.

Windfall: The very first thing he will ask for, without hesitation, is Iskandar. How, and in what capacity? Doesn't matter. Figure it out and he'll deal with those consequences later. There's nothing else he wants more. If, for some reason, he can't be summoned back, Waver will be disappointed but understanding. The Grail's interference would probably make this almost impossible, and it would also depend on whether or not Iskandar wanted to be brought back for real. Waver would never want to force him. If he cant' get him back back, maybe they can let him see him face-to-face one last time.

Otherwise, he would ask for his monetary debts to be cleared. He will never feel like his personal debt to Reines for Kayneth's death will clear, so he will continue to hold the Lord El-Melloi title until she is ready. He wouldn't want a windfall to clear that up - this redemption is something he would feel he must earn on his own.
